HRMC Sponsors Art Contest
Halifax Regional Medical Center congratulates all the participants of a recent art contest sponsored by the hospital’s Community Relations Department. Three area schools participated, entering more than a dozen pieces of art work. “Every entry was wonderful and we were pleased to have such a good response,” said Community Relations Coordinator Crystal Keener.
Sixth through twelfth graders from William R. Davie, Halifax Academy and Roanoke Rapids High School took part in the contest, submitting works in a variety of mediums, such as paint, water color, pencil and crayon. From the entries, two first place winners were chosen, as were two second and third place winners. Honorable mentions and art that placed in the contest was framed and is now on display throughout the hospital.
Mandy Faison, a tenth-grader at RRHS visited HRMC with her family to view the works she submitted, which are currently hanging in the Cardiopulmonary Department and in Human Resources. Faison ‘s “A Walk in the Park,” a Japanese-inspired painting, placed third in the contest and her entry entitled “A Day in the Woods” received honorable mention.
Faison and her classmates have been focusing on Japanese art and culture under the direction of high school art teacher Tina Gregory, who visited Japan in January as an honored guest of the Japanese government. Gregory and 600 other teachers from around the nation were awarded the Japan Fulbright Memorial Fellowship in October and spent three weeks in Japan studying the country’s culture, history, education and industry.
The hospital would like to thank all participants in the contest and their art instructors, Jane Deese of Halifax Academy, Tina Gregory of RRHS and Stanley Comer of William R. Davie. “I hope the hospital can make this contest an annual event. It’s been a great opportunity for students to show off their talents and for the community to view and enjoy local art work,” said Keener.
