Will Mahone Named CEO of Halifax Regional
William (Will) Mahone V of Marion, Virginia has been appointed president & CEO of Halifax Regional Medical Center, effective December 1.
Mahone, 47, has 20 years experience in health care administration in North Carolina and Virginia. For the past five years he has been president and CEO of Smyth County Community Hospital in Marion, Virginia. Previously, he was CEO of Stonewall Jackson Hospital in Lexington, Virginia and Giles Memorial Hospital in Pearisburg, Virginia and Assistant Vice President for Alamance Health Services in Burlington, North Carolina. He also has held executive positions with Carilion Health System, based in Roanoke, Virginia.
We are very pleased to have someone of Will's experience and background to lead Halifax Regional Medical Center into the future," said James Pierce, HRMC Board Chairman. "And we look forward to welcoming Will and his family into our community."
Mahone succeeds M.E. (Rick) Gilstrap who is retiring after 23 years. “Rick is well respected throughout the hospital field, and I am proud to be selected to continue the progress that he led in the hospital and the community,” said Mahone.
Mahone enjoys the quality of life in small communities. “My family and I are excited about moving to Roanoke Rapids,” he said. “I spent 11 years in North Carolina, and my wife, Bonnie, is a native of Burlington, N.C. so we feel comfortable returning to the area.” Their son, Will, is a student at the University of Virginia, and daughter, Anna, is in high school. Mahone begins work December 1, and his family will move to Roanoke Rapids as soon as possible.
Mahone received his undergraduate degree from Elon University in Elon, N.C. and earned his Masters degree in health administration from Duke University.
“I am impressed with the medical center,” Mahone said. “Halifax Regional is a strong organization focused on meeting the changing health needs of the community. The Board of Directors provides outstanding leadership and determines policies that put patients first. The medical staff is comprised of experienced physicians who represent nearly every specialty service. Employees are experienced and dedicated to caring for patients.”
Mahone will become active in the Roanoke Rapids community. In Marion, he was president of the United Way and a director of the Rotary Club. In Lexington, he was chairman of the Community Health Council, which developed health initiatives throughout the County. He’s also been a director of the Virginia Hospital and Healthcare Association.
“Halifax Regional has many opportunities to enhance its service to the community,” Mahone said. “Recent announcements of new businesses and entertainment attractions have created positive momentum that will add to the economic climate of the area.”
The hospital’s role is critical to the prosperity of the community, Mahone says.
“A hospital is the cornerstone of any community, providing essential healthcare services and good jobs while attracting physicians, “Mahone said. “One of the highest criteria of businesses seeking to locate in a community is the quality of healthcare. At Halifax Regional, we will play our role in helping the community achieve its desired future.”
When not working, Mahone enjoys an interest in cars, fishing, gardening and following ACC sports. |
