HALIFAX REGIONAL TO CELEBRATE NATIONAL NURSE’S WEEK
ROANOKE RAPIDS, NC – (May 8, 2007) – Halifax Regional will participate in National Nurses Week May 6 - 12 with a number of activities to honor the Medical Center’s 300 nurses. “Everyday Heroes” is the theme of the celebration. “Nurses are the backbone of the Medical Center,” said Karen Daniels, RN, Vice President of Nursing. The nurses employed at Halifax Regional work in almost every field of the profession from acute bedside care, trauma and surgical nursing to case management, education and patient advocacy. Audrey Hardy, RN, manager of the 6th floor, said she is a nurse because she enjoys helping others. “I have a genuine interest in other people’s well-being,” she said. Mike Joyner, RN, is manager of the Progressive Care Unit. His mother was a nurse, and he began his career as a physical therapy aide while in high school. “I gain a sense of personal satisfaction from helping other people,” he said when asked why he chose nursing as a career. At Halifax Regional, “there is a sense of family that you do not find in large organizations,” Joyner continued. “Nurses are respected here.” Asked what she likes about nursing at Halifax Regional, Hardy said the administration “is genuinely concerned about nurses having a good environment to work in.” At Halifax Regional, “I can provide one-on-one care with a holistic approach,” says Denton. “There is not the rush-rush-rush environment that you find at most hospitals.” Halifax Regional has planned a number of special activities throughout the week to honor its Everyday Heroes. To launch the activities, Daniels and nursing administration will host a reception for nurses. On Thursday, Halifax Regional is holding the Third Annual Nursing Excellence Banquet that recognizes nurses for excellence in a number of categories. The week will wrap-up on Saturday, with a celebration for the birthday of Florence Nightingale, the founder of nursing as a modern profession. “We are taking this time to express our appreciation to our nurses who are such strong advocates for our patients,” Daniels said. “National Nurses Week and the events that we have planned are just a small way that we can say thank you to our Everyday Heroes.”
